It was so great networking with other authors in one setting for Mother's Day weekend. Since Karibu Bookstore is no longer with us, this event becomes even more significant. It gives local authors a chance to showcase their work. The next event is planned for Father's Day weekend. Stay tuned for details.
Salisbury Festival, April 25

The University of Maryland Black Writer's Literary Conference
On April 13, 2008, several local writers attended the event. I was part of the panel on the pitfalls of editing. I shared the following 10 tips:
1) Understand what type of editing is required. It may just be grammatical changes or could be structural.
2) When seeking an editor, ask your writer friends for referrals.
3) Shop around for the best price. Remember that you are paying your hard-earnd money and deserve the best service possible.
4) Do not be afraid to interview the potential editor. Develop a list of questions.
5) Ask for a sample of their work.
6) Find out what genre the editor has experience with. You do not want an editor who specializes in street lit editing your Christian fiction novel.
7) Draw up a contract outlining specifics on deadlines and expectations.
8) Be an active participant in the editing process. Review changes and verify that the manuscript is to your satisfaction.
9) Do not make your last payment until you are satisfied with the final and it is in your hand.
10) Ask your editor if he or she would like to be mentioned in the acknowledgment section of your book. Do not assume.
Book Launch Party a Smashing Success!
On April 5, 2008, I held the launch party for "Broken". Thanks to those who came out! Over 60 people came out to show their love and support. And with plenty of food, music, books and great conversations it was the perfect event. A special thanks to Starbucks, Phillips, and Day Soul Spa for providing door prizes.
